Thailand Volunteer & Gap Year Holiday Programs from GroundRocks
Become a part of local Thai culture and engage with a rural community on one of our Thailand volunteer programs aimed at students looking for a unique travel experience. Through our Thailand gap year programs students have the opportunity to travel to far-flung corners of the country where they can take part in one of our ongoing community development projects – learning to solve practical challenges and adapting to different customs and environments by volunteering in Thailand.
Our Unique Thailand Volunteering and Gap Year Programs Help Build Resilience and Leadership Skills
Volunteer programs are a great way for young people to become empowered, build resilience and strengthen their leadership skills. Each of our Thailand gap year programs includes key elements where students learn to understand and work with people from different cultures, while at the same time demonstrating through practical implementation of Thailand Volunteer work the importance of sustainable community-based development.
Experience History, Culture and Diversity within a Tropical Paradise while Volunteering in Thailand
Officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand, the country is roughly the same size as France and has a population of approximately 69 million people. The people of modern Thailand are as varied as the populations of many nations of the world, however over 90 percent of Thai people are practicing Theravada Buddhists, and like its neighbors, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, it is a faith that unifies and colors all aspects of daily life.
Geographically speaking, Thailand is divided into four main regions: the Central Plains, the North, the Northeast and the South ideal for Thailand volunteer opportunities and Thailand gap year travel.
The fertile Central Plains are home to the majority of the population and incorporate the capital city Bangkok, one of Thailand’s 76 provinces with a staggering 14 million people – dwarfing all other cities. The Central Plains are also where the elegant ruins of ancient cities can be found, such as the former capitals of the Ayutthaya and Sukhothai kingdoms which embody the glorious artistic and cultural heritage of regional influences in Thailand’s development.
Experience the Vibrancy of Chiang Mai and the Lanna Kingdom with Our Thailand Gap Year Program
In the North, the city of Chiang Mai is the heart of the uplands – a vibrant cultural center where the overriding attraction is the potential for outdoor adventure exploring the spectacular mountain terrain; stunning biodiversity; and the rich ethnic hill tribe cultures with their own unique languages and customs. In the North we have several Thailand volunteer programs.
The Northeast, known as Isaan, is the poorest and in some ways the most traditional region with its vast plains of rice paddies and rural way of life. It is also the gateway to the modulating landscapes of the Mekong River valley, holding an amazing variety of religious sites, with Laos bordering its furthermost extremities to the north and east. Southern Isaan stretches to Cambodia and is home to impressive stone temple complexes like Phimai and Phanom Rung, ruins of the former Khmer Empire. Isaan holds plenty of Thailand volunteer opportunities.
By contrast, Thailand’s south is famed more for the beauty of its beaches, idyllic islands and limestone karst landscape, with the Samui archipelago in the Gulf and the exotic islands of Phuket and Phi Phi in the Andaman to the east, the ultimate draw for Thailand Gap Year Travellers.
